Helmets

The Helmet city guide to buying a Motorcycle Helmet

A poorly fitting helmet may not only be uncomfortable, more noisy and may move around when riding if too big or give headaches etc if it is too small, it is also dangerous. A helmet simply will not protect or perform as designed if the head inside it is not snuggly fitted against the impact absorbing material inside the shell.

Measuring
Once you've decided on the helmet (we have thousands available!), to make a better judgement on size we would recommend measuring your head. Using a soft measuring tape, measure around the circumference of your head, across the forehead just above the eyebrows, above the ears and around the back of your head. Helmets are available in sizes from 50cm right up to 67cm! If you are say 58.5cm and a Medium is 57-58cm and a Large is 59-60cm, we would generally suggest going for the smaller size as the interior will compress over time. This is not a guarantee of course and we would always suggest popping to one of our Retail shops (or your local dealer) to try one on (we have 7 shops at the moment).

Another thing to bear in mind, is that a helmet in say size Medium from one Manufacturer may fit completely differently to a Medium from another Manufacturer. Therefore we would always recommend travelling to a dealer to try a number of different brands to get the perfect fit for your head shape.

If you purchase a helmet online from HelmetCity.co.uk, it can be returned (at your cost) as long as our strict Returns Policy is followed. The helmet can only be tried on (not used on the road), no pinlock fitted, no protective film or tags removed and the bag and outer box in the condition we sent to you.

Trying your Helmet on
When your lovely new helmet arrives, pop it on (after reading the advice sheet enclosed in the box) and wiggle it around to make sure the top of your head fits and is settled right in. Give the helmet a push from the front towards the forehead to see if it gives you any pain or discomfort. Do the strap up and tighten it until you feel it is quite tight (but not uncomfortable - you need to breathe!) Look in a mirror - how does it fit on the cheeks? If you can fit a couple of fingers between your cheek and the helmet cheekpads then it is too big, if it is pressing so tight your cheeks are between your teeth and you can't talk, then it may be too small! Please note that cheek pads do compress over time so they sort of 'wear in'. On some of the higher end brands, like Shoei and Arai for example, thinner and thicker cheek pads and even skull pads can be supplied - depending on the model. If you know the size you require at the time of ordering, these can be swapped out free of charge (Shoei and Arai only) - we keep the unwanted size (this only applies to Full Price Helmets).

If you are generally happy with the fit, leave the helmet on for a good length of time to ensure it is not pressing in places that are not immediately apparant. If a helmet is really pressing on your forehead this can sometimes cause a headache over time so it may be worth trying another size or brand.

It is important to read our Returns Policy regarding helmets and the Advice Sheet enclosed with your purchase, before going for a ride as a helmet cannot then be returned if it does not fit or you are not happy with it.

Arai RX-7V Evo - Diamond Black

Arai’s RX-7 has always been the benchmark in motorcycle racing R&D at the very highest level. Handmade in Japan by a three-generation family company of riders, it is Arai’s state of-the-art helmet in terms of protection, ventilation, comfort and fit. The new RX-7V EVO, apart from accumulated improvements under the skin, looks identical. Because it is.

ARAI IN-HOUSE CRITERIA - The difference? Everything. And most recently ECE R22-06 approval. Arai is always trying to accumulate small improvements one-by-one decade after decade as well as meeting standards. In addition to ECE R22-06, every Arai has to meet the company’s own in-house criteria. This is a really important point to note for any rider or racer interested in ultimate protection which comes from Arai’s dedication to protecting fellow riders.

GLANCING OFF - Head protection means managing impact energy. Many understand it to be about absorbing energy, but we believe that’s just one part of impact energy management. The lower the impact energy, the less needs to be absorbed. Arai does that by making rounder, smoother and stronger outer shells to improve Glancing Off performance and reduce impact energy transferring into the helmet. This is unique to Arai and our core philosophy.

ECE R22-06 - ECE R22-06 requires a much more stringent testing process than the previous ECE R22-05 and includes an oblique test to measure rotation. Arai presented the RX-7V and it gained homologation while maintaining its characteristic round, smooth and strong shell design. Or simply put, by being an Arai RX-7V.

PURSUIT OF GAINS IN PROTECTION - Change for the sake of change has never been part of the Arai process. Careful evolutionary progress is what matters. While fashions come and go, Arai’s direction has and always will stay the course: the pursuit of gains in protection. Trendy looks and features may be tempting, and decades of technological innovation in unseen parts of the helmet for enhanced head protection may not help them sell, but Arai is committed to protecting what is priceless: our customers. And, fittingly, the RX-7V EVO maintains its position as a true benchmark of protection and the very best motorcycle helmet that Arai makes to date.

ARAI RX-7V TECHNICAL FEATURES

GENERAL
Outer shell: PB-SNC2 (Peripherally Belted Structural Net Composite) - Arai´s proprietary (super fibre belt) Peripheral Belt, borrowed from our F-1 technology, maximizes shell strength and flexibility while maintaining low weight. Positioned across the top of the eye port, this band allows the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view – especially appreciated in a full racing tuck! The Structural Net Composite adds a physical bond to the resin bond of the many layers of fibres and reinforcing materials within the shell. The latest “Z-Mixture” resins increases material adhesion requiring less resin for a stronger bond between materials for a thinner and lighter shell.
Variable Axis System (VAS) - With VAS, the visor mounting position is lowered, yielding an average of an additional 24mm across both temple areas, in pursuit of the ideal smoother shape that increases the ability of glancing off energy. As a result, this has made it possible for more of the shell to be smoother along and above the test line of the Snell standard.

VENTILATION
RX-7V EVO Ventilation - The combined systems offer excellent and efficient ventilation. The top duct provides 11% more airflow, with bigger switches for effortless operating. The lowered side-air channels guide air from the cheek pad area to the side ducts. The diffuser is 20 mm longer with improved aerodynamics, and 19% larger intake scoops, both work together with the Air Wing to improve stability. The chin cover blocks air intrusion and draws more air from the mouth area.
Free Flow System (FFS) - Creates airflow under the helmet that reduces wind noise and turbulence while increasing the exhaust of hot air.
Lowered side-air channel - Lowered side air channels improve extraction from the cheek pad area to the side ducts, also reducing noise.

FRONT VENTILATION
Center top vent (intake) - The Top Vent provides 11% more airflow than the previous Vent. The bigger switch makes opening and closing easier. The Top Vent has three positions; closed, half open and fully open to adjust the airflow and prevent water intrusion when fully closed.
Diffuser system - The diffusers are 20mm longer and straightened for improved aerodynamics, working together with the Air Wing to improve stability. Compared to the previous diffusers, the efficiency of the intake scoops has increased by 19%. The air intake vents not only have more adjustability with three positions; closed, half open and fully open but also help to improve sealing that decreases wind noise and water intrusion.
Brow vents extended to temple area - Fresh air can enter directly to the forehead area without the need for holes in this critical area of the shell and impact absorbing liner. For specific models the ventilation is extended to the temple area.
Three position chin vent - Three-position chin vent helps in demisting the visor and offering fresh, cool air to the rider.

REAR VENTILATION
Neck exhaust vent - To enhance hot-air extraction from the interior. Increases the ventilation effect at the lower part of the helmet.
Side exhausts - Produce low pressure behind the rear vent for better hot air extraction. Integrated in the shell for better aerodynamics, reduce wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Inside, a small foam dam helps to absorb and diminish excessive noise, without reducing ventilation performance.

AERODYNAMICS
Pull Down Chin Spoiler - Helps minimize wind noise and also aids with the extraction of hot air from the face area. Provides additional deflection of road debris away from neck. Depending on the model the Chin Spoiler is retractable.
Patented Air Wing® adjustable - MotoGP tested and designed to greatly reduce drag, turbulence and buffeting resulting in more comfort and additional top-speed. It improves stability of the helmet at high speeds or when braking hard and reduces noise. Depending on the model the Air Wing is adjustable in five different angles of attack positions to suit every riding position.

VISOR
VAS Max Vision Visor with De-Mist option - VAS MAX Vision shield is standard to provide better visibility in all seasons and for all types of riding.
Shield latch system - Borrowed from our F1 helmet, completely modified 3D moving shield latch mechanism secures the shield like never before, but operates smoothly with an intuitive fluid – one finger operation – even with gloves.
Pinlock insert lens - Effectively prevents misting and fogging of the visor, even under extreme wet and damp conditions. May be cleaned and changed easily.

INTERIOR
Antimicrobial Liner material - Helps maintain neutral acidity levels close to human skin and antibacterial consumption. With the aim of a softer, deeper and even more comfortable fit we developed a softer liner frame material. The liner also has adjustable temple padding that allows for a customized fit.
Replaceable Cheek pads - Cheek pads may be easily removed with hook at the back. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider. Remove by taking the backside out first, Place back by inserting the frontside first.
Replaceable Interior - The complete interior may be easily removed. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.
Replaceable Chinstrap covers - All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.
Replaceable Neckroll - All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.
Speaker pockets - Build in communication systems are popular, but the problem is often that the room for a speaker is limited or just not present, causing unpleasant pressure points. The speaker pockets, offering room for mounting speakers without effecting comfort or fit. (Speaker not included).
Facial Contour System (FCS) - To offer an even better snug fit and enhancing the comfort to the lower jaw, the Facial Contour System (FCS) works with a foam spring support in the cheek pad that compresses and rebounds, providing the necessary support without excessive pressure.
5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Ear cups/Cheek pads - Giving even more ability to craft the perfect fit and comfort, the cheek pads feature a 5 mm peel away layer for added room if needed.
5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Temple pad - Arai´s peel-away temple crown pads give the option of 5 mm more interior width if needed.
Thin centre pad for more room in front area - The result is more room around the nose and mouth area enhancing the famous Arai fit and comfort even more.

COMFORT
Emergency Release System (ERS) - Allows easier access to an injured rider. By pulling the orange tabs integrated in the pads, the cheek pads slide out. Making helmet removal easier for trained medical personnel and rescuers. Minimising the risk of additional injury.
Breath guard - Works in conjunction with the dual-pivot® chin vent to better direct fresh air to the inside surface of the shield while at the same time directing hot breath down and away from the inside surface of the shield.
Chin Curtain (Removable) - Attached to the bottom of the helmet, the chin curtain helps to further accentuate the Egg-shape form. The curtain simultaneously blocks air intrusion from turbulent air below and increases negative pressure to enhance the exhaust function of FFS by drawing more air from the mouth area. The improved airflow reduces noise even further.
